Black Insect, Algarve, Oct 2011- ID help (1 Viewer)

Hello all
Any ideas on the attached photos.
The scary black insect with orange legs was seen in a pine wood near Sagres.
It was almost wasp like at least 25mm long.
Also along the same lines as Phil's, below the unknown grasshoppers seen at mount Foia, also in the Algarve.
Thanks
Mick

I saw the same type of robber fly on the Rio Genal in southern Spain last month. I posted an ID request on here, but so far no luck.

EDIT. It appears from Larry Lade's link that it's Asilus barbarus.

Thanks Larry
