Waking up to wildlife

Fitness guru Mr Motivator and BBC TV presenter Nick Baker, of The Really Wild Show, will be launching English Nature’s Local Nature Reserve celebrations in Sheffield on Sunday July 17.

The celebrities will be Waking up to Wildlife at an action packed celebration at Shire Brook Valley Local Nature Reserve (LNR) in Woodhouse.

From July 16th to 31st more than 300 events will be held on reserves around the country to encourage more people to explore and enjoy LNRs and to show them how getting close to wildlife can be good for both your physical and mental wellbeing.

The celebrations will be marked by the launch event at Shire Brook Valley. This fantastic wildlife-filled green oasis, surrounded by five townships, used to be home to two collieries and a sewage works. Now the site has woodlands, ancient hedgerows and meadows, lowland heathland, ponds and marshland.

Mr Motivator will demonstrate the benefits of exercising outdoors with a wild workout on the reserve at 1pm. Once visitors are warmed up they can take their pick from a wide range of activities on offer during the afternoon.

Those wanting to get closer to nature can go on a wildlife safari with Nick Baker, and may be able to catch a glimpse of the water voles, harvest mice, foxes, grass snakes, sparrowhawks, damselflies and dragonflies that live on the site, or could even come face to face with the highland cattle that graze there during the summer months. Wildlife experts from English Nature will also be on hand to answer any questions.

Those inspired by Mr Motivator’s fitness session can have a go at a number of sports activities with Activity Sheffield, including relay races and penalty shoot-outs, or take part in a guided health walk.

There will also be demonstrations of willow weaving, basket making and falconry and visitors will be able to have a go at tai chi, silk painting, a nature treasure trail and much more. All of this will take place to the sound of a steel band who will provide entertainment throughout the afternoon.
