Birding spots & local bird guides (1 Viewer)

Hi.

We are going to visit peninsular Malaysia and Sabah for a three week independent birding trip in February/March. Our itinerary contains Kuala Sengor, Fraser's Hill, Taman Negra (and possibly Cameron Highlands) on peninsular Malaysia as well as Sepilok, Kinabatangan, and Kinabalu (and possibly Danum) on Borneo.
  • Are some of the spots redundand and are there better ones, respectively?
  • Are there any precise birding spots/trails/lodges you should visit in these places (unfortunately there is no "Where-to-watch" book for Malysia/Borneo).

We are going to bird without having a guide all the time. However we want to have some guiding for seeing more elusive higlights (Pittas, Bristlehead and the like as well as possible mammals).
  • Can you recommend local guides in the areas mentioned above?

Thanks!

Kilian

Hi Kilian, we've just spent a month in Sabah, and how we got on, with other people's input and some other gen is here:

The next 3 pages or so are all Sabah. Highlights included a male Giant Pitta at Sepilok.

3 weeks doesn't seem long for all the sites you mention, especially as I'd recommend as long as you can at Taman Negara. If you have to miss out somewhere, then you'll not see much at Cameron Highlands that you won't get at Fraser's Hill, though we did see Mountain Peacock-pheasant there. Yellow-breasted Warbler is common in Borneo.

Peninsular Malaysia starts at post 136 on this page:

All a bit long-winded, but should be some useful gen there and logistics if you've got time to go through it.

Hope it's some help, I'm sure you'll have a wicked time whatever,

cheers,

Larry
