Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds Dec. 1, 2015

Yesterday with a class. Nasty weather but lots of birds around. Ponds are mostly frozen so waterfowl is concentrated in the water holes that remain open. Makes for easy scope viewing!

Dalian Bay Dec. 5, 2015

Some Saturday Christmas shopping was followed by 1.5 hours patrolling Dalian Bay near the Dalian Development Zone (Kai Fa Qu) for winter ducks together with my parents. This is just one of the places that should be birded better than it is. It's a common area for wintering ducks and gulls. Yesterday there were not the numbers that will be there later in winter but it did have 2 White-winged Scoter which were lifers for this guy |:D| This bay is easily reachable from any part of Dalian.

Thanks to my dad for calmly reporting that he had two scoter-like ducks in his bins while we were scanning different parts of the bay.

Pictures below show a recent Eastern Buzzard eating the chicken at our camera trap as well as an Upland and Little Owl from last Friday.

I wasn't actively into birding during the one year that I spent there, but had recently been thinking that Dalian Kai Fa Qu should be a good location. Good one on the Scoters.

Santaizi Trip Dec. 11, 2015

Spent just over an hour on site at the crane place near Wafangdian. It's at a small place called Santaizi. There was certainly more there than we saw but we focused on the cranes which were new for all of the students. The flyover swans were also a hit.

Do the counting game on the picture of the flying cranes. We did this on the bus on the way back to school. Look at it for 2 full seconds and then guess the number.

The Falcated Duck picture below was from a short trip earlier yesterday with the other class here in Jinshitan. We enjoyed watching them ride the waves as they fed near where a small river enters the ocean right on one of the main beaches near the school. Very cold but clear here yesterday.

Jinshitan Coast Dec. 15, 2015

Quick trip this morning with a class to bait the camera trap again after a Buzzard took our entire chicken..... My first ever record of Eurasian Nuthatch right in Jinshitan. I've seen them in the winter at Laotieshan and always around Dandong, but had only seen Chinese Nuthatch right in Jinshitan until today.

Wafangdian Dec. 15, 2015

Another brief trip to the Santaizi area near Wafangdian yesterday afternoon with a different class. There were a lot of farmers out in the fields which meant less cranes in that area. We did not have the time to go check out the many other places of this excellent site. We did see 80 Common and 1 Hooded Crane so it was not all in vain. 3 Oriental Storks were in the area as well but some Chinese photographers we bumped into were saying there were more than 20 down another road. This is another fantastic southern Liaoning birding destination that is way way under birded.

If it was checked every day each winter I'm sure Siberian Crane and Stellar's Sea Eagle, etc..., etc... would be possible.

Black Mountain near Dalian Development Zone (Kaifaqu) Dec. 26, 2015

A couple hours in a car with my wife and daughter. Very cold and most birds were down out of the wind. This is a great area for winter birding as I've seen Golden Eagle, Bullfinch, Alpine Accentor, etc.. in previous winters. Long-tailed and Pallas's Rosefinch are almost easy there during normal winters. It has been a very mild winter so far (except today) so I wasn't expecting many eruptive species from the far north but I did have another amurensis Eurasian Nuthatch after the first in Jinshitan for me a couple weeks ago. There are still groups of Grey Heron around the Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds. Usually they are uncommon/rare in December here.

Wind chill below -20 outside at the moment.

Jinshi Golf Club Jan. 14, 2016

A nice break in the cold today so went out and had a walk around the large Jinshi Golf Course. This is a small bit of land that sticks out into the ocean and contains great natural habitat despite having 36 holes carved into it.

By far the most bizarre record of the morning were 4 Common Rosefinches in the usual Long-tailed Rosefinch area. The only records I have of it are the last week of April and first week of May and again in the first week of September until the second week of October when it is common.

Nice collection. I saw that your Blue-Rock Thrush got a Rare Bird notice in eBird. Cold front is late in arriving, so I think I will head out as the next week promises to be too cold for me to venture very far.
