Hi and Baby Blackbird... (1 Viewer)

Hi :)

I'm Sally from Crewkerne, in Somerset. |=)|

Just thought I'd join today, as I am a bit worried about a baby blackbird which 'our' resident Mr and Mrs B left in our garden to feed, in the pouring rain, fed him/her a couple of times and then they both flew off and don't appear to have been back since. |=(| We watched the baby for a while, just sitting there getting soaked and we were really worried. The baby moved itself to a slightly more sheltered area (Behind our recycling bin) and so I went out and put an umbrella up over the bin, which I suppose did frighten the baby (But I was just trying to stop him getting even wetter). :( Anyway, the baby seems to have gone from our garden now, but we can still hear him calling for the parents and I have seen Mr B looking for the baby, with some food in his beak, so hopefully he will find him/her soon!!

We moved here back in September and this is our first garden, so it's just wonderful to have our 'own' birds that we have got to know and are able to have so much pleasure from watching. We have had a few problems with our fat ball feeders though, as we have had Jackdaws and Crows (And even a Rook) attacking them, devouring the balls AND knocking the feeders over the fence, so that the balls tipped out!! |!| Now we have moved the feeders to a better position though, so even though the Jackdaws still TRY to get on the feeders, it is much more difficult for them now! :t:

Hi Sally and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

I'm pretty sure the adults will know where the young ones are, they also have to try and encourage them to feed independently. Hopefully all will be well. Try and scatter some mealworms on the ground for the young ones to peck at.

You have Jackdaws, Crows and Rooks.... I too, have 'vandals' in Starlings, who arrive mob handed at my window feeders!! They are all such intelligent birds though and can be great fun to watch. Remember they are birds too, and have young to feed.

You may like to visit our Garden Bird sub-forum - available on that link, or scroll down a little on the main Forums page. You'll get lots of information, advice and help in there.

I hope you enjoy your time here with us.

Thanks for all the welcomes! |;|

Delia Todd, I love all birds, so don't mind any of them feeding off our feeders and I especially do love Corvids for their intelligence.....But, the problem is, they devour the fat balls so quickly that it is getting expensive!! We have so many small birds visiting too that we don't want the bigger birds to leave nothing for them. So, unfortunately, we will have to keep shooing them away!

Anyway, at least the baby Blackbird is ok now! |=)|

Yesterday we had a lovely surprise, after the baby Blackbird had been and gone. We have had a pair of Robins (Obviously a breeding pair) coming back and forth to the feeder and every time the male comes, he sings as if to announce his arrival at the feeder! |:D| Anyway, in the afternoon, we saw one baby Robin sat on the arch (Where the feeder is hanging from) and then another baby joined him/her and then one of the parents!! |=)| It was so lovely and I managed to get a couple of pics of them. |:D|
