Any ideas on a lizard like thing a saw in Rhodes a few years ago?

No photo I'm afraid but I saw it in the grounds of a hotel in April. I recall it as very slender, about a foot long and VERY bright green. I've tried to ID it from books and the net on and off, but with no joy.

Thanks guys - Brian's link most impressive.

Unfortunately none of the lizards menitioned match my recollection of it. Should also have said that it seemed to be very smooth rather than scaly.
