Hi All,

I'm going to find myself in the St Albans area over the next couple of months - anyone know any good birding spots??

Rgds... Ruby

about 25 miles East of St A is the Lee Valley. Smew should be at Amwell sometime soonish. Bitterns will be returning......

Right in St Albans is Verulamium park, this area has an ornamental lake, in spring there is a Heronry with about 15/20 pairs of birds, some are there all year round and are very tame. there are Great crested Grebe, Little Grebe, and assorted ducks, some feral, but also winter visiting ones too. It is always worth a good look around as I have seen Black-necked Grebe and Black-throated Diver here. The Stream that runs along the east side by the footpath can give surprisingly close views of Kingfisher if you are lucky.

Tring reservoirs can be excellent on a good day. My first visit I saw nearly as many species as on a trip to Minsmere - but its not always that good!

There is a bittern that roosts there.
