Let's hope that this thread is longer than March's...
Last night was reasonably mild though cloudless most of the evening. My catch:
Oak beauty 2
small quaker 8
common quaker 3
Hebrew character 1
the Herald 1
D. fagella 1

No sun but here's a photo of the herald;

well I'll add to this thread.
Last night had
Clouded Drab 4
Common Quaker 3
Early Grey 2
Hebrew Character 1
Double-striped Pug 1
+ 1 'plume moth'

Lovely Herald Ken, I`ve still yet to see one of those. However, I had another first for the year when i got home in the shape of this Angle Shades that was hanging on the backyard gate, surprised it was still there what with the kids being of school at the moment.

At last!

I had four moths in the trap this morning! o:)

I haven't seen a moth since February! I've been away for the second half of March - before that it was too stormy to run a trap.
Last night was slightly foggy but reasonably mild and the wind was dropping.

Early Grey
Hebrew Character
Common Quaker
Pug which I think is Brindled?

(I hope the Common Quaker is correct, it seems so long since I've looked at moths!)

Ran last night:
Agonopterix alstromeriana, 1
Emmelina monodactya, 1
Red Chestnut, 2
Hebrew Character, 1

And what looks like a Diamond-back Moth but need to take a closer look after work.

Also seen an Angle Shades but it was one raised from a larva taken from our spinach beet earlier in the year. First thing the stupid moth did was fly straight for the hottest light it could find and committed suicide! Next time I'm checking outside.

Nothing much different last night except what I assume is Emmelina monodactyla.
It's about 12 dec C here this evening, so perhaps some new moths will emerge. o:)

Had the light on for a couple of hours last night & got 5 species:
Hebrew Character 1
D.S.Pug 1
Emmelina monodactyla 1
Epiphyas postvittana 2
Diurnea fagella 1
Its a shame winter seems about to return after tonight.

Lam Tsuen Valley, Hong Kong. 4th April (125W mv + Robinson trap)

First busy night of the year.
Good conditions, with a heavy mist - almost a light mizzle, but not enough to wet the ground; minimum temp around 18°C. Stuck the trap out on the rooftop at home (it's a flat roof) as soon as I could (around 19:45, about an hour after dusk), as the family had a dinner to celebrate a Chinese festival yesterday, held at my wife's parents place. Didn't take a look until 05:15 this morning and found (after two hours listing and taking photos, plus another half an hour databasing the list) 162 species recorded.

Managed some decent photos for about 20 species, including Ambulyx moori (a large hawkmoth); Euclasta vitralis (a stilt-legged pyral); the Wax Moth (Galleria melonella); a wasp moth - Syntomoides imaon (Arctiidae); Promalactis semantris (a very colourful tiny micro) and Nausinoe geometralis (a largish marble patterned pyral). Still have a couple of things to identify, including an Hemithea sp. (emerald) that I can't place.
As usual, thumbnails posted f.y.i. - links to bigger photos are via the highlighted species in the text above. Enjoy.

cheers,

Roger.

A long winter in Norway...

Hi!

Here in Norway we still have winter, at least here where I live (Nord-Fron, Oppland). But if I go a few km down to the bottom of the valley there is a warm hill, a side of the valley where the snow melts much earlier than other places here. I have been there two times now in april, with quite different conditions. The first time i went there was 3/4, and then all the snow was gone there- with clear weather and sun in the daytime, and the temperature dropped below zero as the sun went down.

That time there was not much flying to the light, but there came a few to the wineropes:
Satellite- Eupsilia transversa- 6
Chestnut- Conistra vaccinii- 1

I gave it another try yesturday, 6/4- and this time it was snowing- but the temperature stayed on the warm side of zero. Despite the snowy conditions there was a few moths flying, both to the light and the wineropes.
Satellite- Eupsilia transversa- 12
Chestnut- Conistra vaccinii- 1
Clouded drab- Orthosia incerta- 2

Attached is a photo from yesturday. Today there is 20 cm of fresh snow again at my place.....

Regards
Svein B

That's amazing how the moths still fly in the snow, Svein, nice photo!

It was 3 degrees overnight here on 5th April and I just caught
Common Quaker (1)
Hebrew Character (1)

I did better on 3rd April which was a mild night with
Early Grey (4)
Turnip moth (new for me)
Double-striped pug (4)
Emmelina Monodactyla (2)
Eudonia angustea
One more micro I am working on.

I'll post some pics later.
(We have had a little snow here too - just a dusting!)

from 3rd April

A well marked double-striped pug here. Do you think the other three pugs are also double-striped? Is the micro Eudonia angustea ? I've only just started looking at micros.

Cheers

Hi, I just came in after trying my 160w MBTF trap, and 35 wineropes. Tonight there was a mild breeze from south keeping the temperature over zero all the time I was out (from 21.00 to 01.30). It was fun to see there was quite a lot flying now, the spring seems to be on its way here in Norway too. Here is a list:

Eupsilia transversa- Satellite 40+
Conistra vaccinii- Chestnut 6
Orthosia incerta- Clouded drab 15
Orthosia gothica- Hebrew character 8
Achlya flavicornis- Yellow horned 13
Xylena vetusta- Red swordgrass 5
Brachionycha nubeculosa- Rannoch spawler 2
Lycia hirtaria- Brindled beauty 4
Lithophane consocia- Softly`s Shoulder-knot 3

A few photos from the night added too.
