I came across this guy out in the middle of a pond. I first thought turtle and have been through every turtle enature has to offer and nothing has this distinctive red striping. Then I thought okay, frog. Ditto on no frog matching the facial features. Anybody have any ideas?? I would say it was about 5 inches.

Well dang, it's another slider. Enature never showed this version of the red-eared and I was looking for the red stripe. Thanks so much Charles.

Your critter looks alot like a red-eared turtle, as described and pictured in Peterson's guide to reptiles and amphibians. It's on the same page as painted turtles and their 'kin'.

These once were sold in dime stores, often painted wild colors, with little bowl sized aquariums and cans of dried flies. My Daughter had a pair in a 20 gallon aquarium, and they kept growing and growing, until We transferred them to the exhibit at the local Alligator Farm. I suspect most sat in their little bowls of stagnant water and died, however. They really need the option to swim free, also a dry perch in the Sunlight, and better food than dried flies.
