(I won't be commenting on the goose ;) )

Thanks for the pic of the Tufted Duck - I think it's what I saw, though I couldn't see the special bill color - perhaps because it was such an overcast day.

Great quail capture! It's amazing to see one that well, let alone get a photo! Congrats!

A definite Greater White Front for me Tom - the bill is too long and its bigger than the Gadwall and it doesn't look cute - the last criteria is somewhat vague I know!

Cheers
Mike

Jinshitan Sea Farming Ponds April 23, 2012

A fantastic 2 hours before dark. We had very heavy rain all day Saturday and today the temperature was quite cold (I would guess around 5-6 degrees all day). I was back to wearing gloves. Heavy fog covered the area for most of the day preventing the temperature from rising. I was keen to get out after the rain but was not able to yesterday. As I watched through the windows at work, I knew today was going to produce a lot of new stuff. At lunch I heard a Wood Sandpiper flying over my house in the fog trying to figure out where it was. Once at the site after work I called my lovely and patient wife to inform her I was going to be home late......

The rain made the dirt roads a complete mess and I got absolutely filthy, not to mention my motorbike which was stuck 3 times:-C At some points the wheels were so caked in mud that they struggled to turn. All worth it for the banquet of new birds moving into the area or migrating through.

The weather made photography almost impossible. Also there was too much happening to concentrate on one bird for long.

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds April 26, 2012

I love migration! Being on a narrow peninsula really funnels birds and brings them right past me:t: This week and the next will be slightly crazy and I already am a mess and most likely will continue to be until the end of May. This place really explodes with migrants. You have to understand that I bird a very small area of habitat that is far from ideal. It's not even close to a major migratory stop over point in comparison to other locations within an hour or so of where I live. There are dump trucks, machines, dust, and noises everywhere.

5 Eurasian Spoonbills flew high overhead and then later a single flew right past me near the ocean. This was a lifer for me still so I'm in quite a good mood here.

I spent most of the time near the mudflats.

Nice one, Tom! Spoonbills are not common in northern China. Good to hear that Red-throated Pipits are coming through in numbers. I'm going to Wild Duck Lake tomorrow - will be interesting to compare what's going on there with what you are seeing...

Sea-farming ponds April 30, 2012

Was supposed to be my big day shorebirding up the coast. I left my place at 4:45 am to make it to Zhuanghe and back stopping wherever I chose at some of the huge mudflats that can be found between here and there. I also wanted to count Chinese Egrets and look for flagged Godwits, etc... Thoughts of Spoon-billed Sandpiper also were on my mind..... All started well but I got turned back by fog about 1/4 of the way there. You can believe me when I say it was bad, I'm not one to cancel a birding day too quickly. I will try another day this week when better conditions present themselves. There certainly birds about in the fog but visibility was almost nothing and getting worse. I was also frozen on my motorcycle with water vapour dripping from the hair on my knuckles and eye lashes. Instead my wife and I took our two kids to one of the beach areas in the fog. The kids had fun and I heard a clear Korean Bush Warbler calling. A bit early but an unmistakeable call. Also picked up this years first Northern Hobby among other things. In the afternoon it cleared up a bit and I made a quick 2 hour trip to the regular ponds. I almost got trapped due to an excavator on one end and a bulldozer on the other end of the only way in and out destroying roads while I birded. This place will not be around long.

Anyways, here is the list from this morning in the fog, today with my family, and this afternoon for the only 2 hours clear enough to see.

Of note, I unzipped by winter coat today! Still had a T-shirt and long sleeve fleece on underneath.....One day it will warm up here.

Ah ha! I finally saw one FOS bird before you! You usually beat me out through persistence and better skills - I haven't really figured out if most birds appear in both places simultaneously or not. However, we definitely had a pair of stilts 2 weeks ago, and at least a half dozen last week. (Grey herons, which shouldn't require too much skill for me to be able to see, have not appeared here at all.)

I'm also interested to notice your Asian Brown Fly - I've been wondering how soon I should be seeing them, but haven't seen one yet.

I looked closely at the yellow wags last weekend, and took mental notes, but forgot to write them down, and now can't recall which type I saw! Nice selection in your pics! Interesting to see the grebe nesting already. Like the flying shovelers too!

PS Know what you mean about the weather! We've actually had lots of dust as well as today's fog - not much sun, and not particularly warm most days.... Hope the holiday holds some better birding weather for you yet!

Quick visit to the ponds and a few other things while at a playground with my kids. Temperature at 22 degrees today with no fog:t:

Many things left today with the arrivial of a warm southern front and the tide wasn't right for shorebirds.

Paul Holt arrives tomorrow and will join me for the big shorebird day which will happen on Thursday now! Maybe I can teach him a few things about birding......;)

Do you think the pictured Wood Sandpiper looks like a Solitary from North America? Something about the pose. It's a Wood but it's fun to dream.

Hmm, few spotted doves there - so interesting how birds distribute themselves! Quite interesting to see your FOS's - very helpful as I need to get a better sense of the order of movement of the various species.

Jinshitan to Zhuanghe shorebirding May 3, 2012

Paul Holt and I left Jinshitan at 4:30 am and slowly made our way to Zhuanghe, stopping wherever there were birds to see along the way. I think we arrived and had lunch at Zhuanghe right around noon. Zhuanghe is a little under two hours drive from Jinshitan without stopping. Near the end of the day the tide pushed numerous flagged Bar-tailed Godwits and 2 Great Knots close towards us. In all, we were able to see over 20 tags but many were just out of reach and they left because of the rising tide just before they came into view. We were able to read several at another site where we found a high tide roost but the majority weren't able to be seen clear enough. We did record colours, position on the legs, and other details that will make the researchers (in Australia) very happy. Attached is a photo of a very visible one.

Two lifers for me were 3 Pied Avocets (not too many pass this way) and 2 Asian Dowitchers (thanks to Paul). The dowitchers were too far for photos but clearly seen with good scope views while they were feeding among a large group of Bar-tailed Godwit. I should add that, being in summer plumage, they were very similar in colour to the Godwits.

An absolutely fantastic full day of shorebirding with one of the world's best!

Grey-faced Buzzard - 2 Funny story - we stopped because our driver thought he saw something in a tree. We stopped to check and it ended up being nothing, but right at that moment two flew directly over us. Must have been a movement of them but we had shorebirds to look at. It's only the 2nd record for me close to Jinshitan. (flocks of them at Laotieshan in autumn).
Common Kestrel - 3
