USA - FL to WA car trip... looking for birding stops! (1 Viewer)

Hey all! I'm going to be moving from Florida to Washington (state) in a week or so. I thought it would be cool to make some stops along the way and get some birding done throughout the southern/western US! My plan is, more or less, to get on I-10 in Florida, follow it all the way to Los Angeles, and then take I-5 north to Washington. With that in mind, can anyone recommend birding stops that are along those corridors? The closer to the freeway, the better - it's already a 6-day drive and I'd rather not make it too much longer, although I definitely want to take advantage of the chance I've got.

Wide Open

That's kind of a wide open question, there is so much out there in your route, it makes it hard to answer without writing a book.

But here's an idea - visit the Cosumnes River Preserve near Stockton, California.(http://www.nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/states/california/preserves/art6318.html). You can stay in Lodi, but don't get stuck there (oh lord).

Also, I like the Sacramento NWR Refuge, right off I-5 in Northern Californa.

Some suggestions: Big bend NP (TX) the Chirichauas (Portal - AZ), Madera Canyon etc (Green Valley - AZ), Salton Sea (CA). Route 1 from San Luis Obispo to Monterrey (inc the Big Sur and possibly a pelagic - CA). Other places that I can recommend are Yosemite (CA) and Point Reyes National Seashore (CA)

Madera Canyon

Cassowary has some good ideas, particularly the Tucson area. Madera Canyon is a must-see spot, but if you don't want to take the time, The Arizona-Desert Museum is good too. the Cactus Wren was there last January, and the Redstart at Madera Canyon.

I second the stop at "Sac Refuge". Easy stuff. Chico is not far away for snoozing and fun. Or is that fun and snoozing.
