Hi,

Thanks for looking.

Would you be able to identify the golden-brown cluster of toadstools growing on a dead three stump in Norfolk in February below please?

(Two photos attached).

Thanks for you help.

Regards,

Chris

It's Velvet Shank Flammulina velutipes var. velutipes. One of the few fungi to grow mainly in winter, the fruit bodies can actually survive being frozen solid.

Thank you so much Jonathan. Identifying these things is a tricky business. Really appreciate your help.

No problem, Chris. It is certainly very tricky to start identifying fungi, simply because there are so many of them. Winter is actually a great time to try and get to grips with some of them, simply because there isn't such a bewildering variety as in the autumn.

Thanks for the info Jonathan.

There are a large number of fruiting bodies on a dying Horse Chestnut at my work which are present at the moment and look very much like these. I'll have to take a closer look, but from what you say they're the most likely candidate.

Fungi fascinate me, but I do find them somewhat overwhelming. As you say, bewildering numbers about in the Autumn.

Cheers,

Matt
