Any ideas? (1 Viewer)

I saw an unusual bird in the dunes at West Kirkby today. It was a bit smaller than a starling, mostly black, with a white throat and an orange breast. I can't find anything in my trusty Observers' or Collins. The nearest thing I've seen in the gallery is a white throated robin, but the picture was from Iran! My bird had rather more white on the throat. Has anyone any ideas?

I'd say it was most likely a Stonechat.

It could be a Stonechat (most likely is), but I think our friend Chris needs a better assessement on bird size and bird anatomy. ;)

There are Stonechats there if that helps - a nice breeding pair, alas just outside my survey tetrad!
Thanks, that does seem likely. I could have misinterpreted the white at the throat. I don't have a lot of experience using binoculars, and I have my arm in plaster at the moment, so I'm even less steady than usual!

If it turns its head to face you the white collar can look like its throat.
