A freebie replacement for AVG! (1 Viewer)

Peewit

Once a bird lover ... always a bird lover
Hello there

I have the free version of AVG as my virsiou checker at the moment.

Yes, :eek!: I am having endless issues with AVG at the moment over the past few months.

My problems range from AVG turning itself off, to uninstalling itself like it did yesterday. When I try to reinstall it I am faced with a black icon, and that is all I ever get (photo enclosed)

Anyone recommend a good reliable free virus checker like AVG which I can use as a replacement...or otherwise (if AVG is a write off)

Thank you in advance :t:

I use Avast's free antivirus, and that is an excellent programme.

I certainly wouldn't use Microsoft Security Essentials, as it lost its AV-TEST certificate a few years ago.

I've been using Panda Antivirus recently and quite like it. It's simple to use and is relatively unintrusive compared to ones like Avast and Avira.

Panda provides very good protection, but in test results it is actually shown to impair (slow) performance more than the likes of Avast and Avira. But good luck to you if your experience is different.

Hi Kathy, i have used a few different AV programmes over the years. My current one is Avast free. To stop it being intrusive I go to settings and select silent/gaming mode. This way it just runs in the background. MSE must still be an effective choice otherwise why would Microsoft use it as the default AV on Windows 8, 8.1 & W10? It is included as part of Windows Defender. I would also encourage you to have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware installed and run a scan every few weeks or so. If you download any of these always do it from the authors site to prevent any nasty add-ons.

Make sure you uninstall AVG completely by running the AVG Remover Tool first

I had an error recently that caused the start menu to not load on startup, so the computer more or less forced you to restart - and no change. That error was caused by in incompatibility between avast and windows 10, and it was very easy to find plenty of other descriptions of exactly the same error on the internet. Just as a little warning.

I would not take a grade for a program that is several years old to be meaningful regarding the effectiveness of a current version.

It is called Windows Defender these days, and it is still rated just as good as some other anti-virus applications by AV-Test.

Never had any issues with Windows Defender

The links you have provided show it to have a rating of 3.5/6 and 4.5/6 respectively for protection on those operating systems, ranking it bottom and third-bottom in terms of its ability to protect your computer.

I'm not saying it won't protect your computer, just that there are much better options out there.

You might have a point here,.. and I can understand that other anti-virus applications are better options for a lot of people. But personally speaking, I find free commercial anti-virus alternatives like AVG, McAffee very annoying because they are doing there very best to convert me into a paying customer.

This of course does not qualifies Windows Defender / Security essentials as the best, but all I can say is that it did the trick for me for the last decade.

Thank you everyone for your input, and suggestions. I forgot to say that we do not have Wins10 set up yet. |:$|
The reason for this is because our PC is on the way out (had it since 2008) and it is slow and painful to use now. I need to restart it often, and it drives me bonkers at the best of times. :eek!:

Once we are set up with our new PC, we plan to use the best technology that we can get a hold of that gives us least hassle, and the best protection (and free if possible!) ;)

After a couple of important events have taken place in our life, OH and I plan to clear out all of our files, and start afresh as that is the best way forward for us. A clean slate, and all that goes with it. :-O :-O

I wish you all the best with whatever might be in the fresh start, and something tells me you're not only talking about the hard/software here.
