American kestrel with prey item (Ontario, Canada) (1 Viewer)

Thanks KC. I did not find the nest this year (was not looking for it) but will be on the lookout for it next Spring. Based on past observations, kestrels tend to fledge in the general area year after year. The nest itself could be a couple of hundred yards away. Locally, I know generally when they fledge so will be checking a week or two before to see where the activity is.

I know kestrels nest in tree cavities and also in man-made nest boxes.

PS. We have 3 species of falcons that nest in Ottawa, Ontario. Peregrine falcon being the largest, followed by Merlin and the smallest falcon is the American Kestrel. I have seen all 3 this summer. In the winter months we sometimes, although rarely, get to see a Gyrfalcon.
