I know these birds have personality, but I was surprised to witness some unusual behavior yesterday. I was taking a walk and heard a rush of wings next to me in a forsythia bush. Heard the classic "chirp" of a cardinal, and sure enough, a bright red male flew up to a higher branch. I heard more chips coming from the forsythia, and assumed it was his mate. Nope! A mockingbird flew up very close to me, and every time the cardinal chirped, the mockingbird chirped back! As the cardinal hopped from branch to branch, the mockingbird followed a few feet behind.
I eventually moved on in search of a flicker nest, but I wondered if anyone else has ever observed a mockingbird following and responding to the calls of another bird?
