Two snakes - Catalunya

I've a feeling that these are both the same species and possibly Southern Smooth Snakes, photographed a few days ago near El Prat de Llobregat. Can anybody advise?

I would have thought Viperine Snake given the chequered backs and aquatic habits?

Viperine Snake looks pretty good, John. Thanks. A new one for us.

As for running away, we were more likely to get in the ditch with them. Both beautiful animals and worthy of the prolonged exposure to the Iberian sun that we had whilst watching them.

Despite its name Viperine Snake Natrix maura is a very close relative of Grass Snake Natrix natrix and not poisonous in the slightest!
