I'm currently using an old Manfrotto 168 B&S head but finding it more & more clunky. To gain any improvement what sort of price would I be looking at please.

I'm currently using a Manfrotto 055 tripod & my longest lens is a 400 f5.6

Well there is the Manfrotto 486 RC2 which is around £46 which is strong enough to take your 400mm. That is about the cheapest, the prices move up from there:
Manfrotto 488 RC2 £70
Manfrotto 468MG RC2 £180
the 468 comes in several different models, so I recomend checking out the manfrotto site for some more info:
