I am a tad ashamed to admit I am not sure 100% what the reserve list stands on. I think it's 242 on the basis that it stood at 235 when I wrote the opus (as at the end of 2007) and since then I believe we have added seven:

Twite
Caspian Gull
Glossy Ibis
Red-necked Grebe
Ring-billed Gull
Baird's Sandpiper
Hawfinch

Is there anything I have missed?

I think you are correct Phil.

Des.

Tuesday's work party

This Tuesday 31st October we will be working at the FLASHES.
With the Roving volunteers and the Contractors still on site we thought we would join them.
Our work will be pollarding willows, hedge laying and generally improving the tall leggy scrub for nesting and berry production.
We will also be improving the cuckoo hide
Please meet at the SAILING pool car park 9am or make your way to the FLASHES.B :)john.
I suggest heavy boots rather than wellies:t:

I wonder if the contractors might be keeping gates open all day ....

Whooper Swan still at the Moors Pool as per Andy A.

Also the lingering juvenile Black-tailed Godwit and a Dunlin.

The sewage works gate is open but we have made them.awae that foxes could get in.. To be honest Phil there is a lot of activity by the gates from the Contractors. Their base is next to it so very active for refuelling , portaloo refreshments etc.

0645...A cold start at the moors today. All the swans were snugly tucked up so it was difficult to spot the Whooper, but it soon woke up and started to feed. Other highlights were

Blackwit (1)
Dunlin (1)
Cetti's (2)
Coal Tit (1)
Coot (c130)
Cormorant (7)
Curlew (12)
Gadwall (1)
GS Woodpecker (2)
Green Woodpecker (1)
Little Egret (2)
GW Egret (1)
Lapwing (c50)
Pochard (9)
Shoveler (30)
Teal (25)
Starling (250+)

...a short visit to the flashes to observe progress, and a couple of pics of 'large white birds'

I would confirm that Dave's Hawfinch on Saturday did indeed take the reserve's list to 242 species. A revised and updated checklist is attached.

At the present rate of additions it will probably take until around 2030 before Upton Warren reaches the magical mark of 250; nothing will be added when the BOU and the British List adopt the IOU taxonomy with effect from the 1st January 2018. If everyone could post their thoughts over the next few days as to what these eight species are likely to be then I will compile the results with the most popular suggestions.

To get things started my eight predictions are:

(Tundra) Bean Goose
Green-winged Teal
Ring-necked Duck
Cattle Egret
White-rumped Sandpiper
Lesser Yellowlegs
Wryneck
Great Reed Warbler

Two visits to The Moors today. In the morning there was beautiful light providing some lovely water reflections from many birds including the Little Egret, Black-tailed godwit and Greenshank. The second visit was late afternoon where I spied four Goldcrests in the hedgerow whilst heading back to the car. Light was really poor for this shot, but I couldn't resist posting a picture of this little chap anyway.
