i'm new to this birding thing, and i just saw a bird in my backyard
that i have never seen before...

he was speckled brown and black, with a solid black patch on his chest.
he had a thin orange stripe running along his wing and a long thin beak.

he was eating the little guys under a stepping stone in my garden.
and had a slight waddle when he walked across the ground...

ANY CLUES? :D

I agree with steveo, sounds like it could be a Northern Flicker.

YES! i am 98% positive this was the little one in my yard!
and it makes sense too, since his diet is 75% bugs/ants!
