This appears to be some kind of sparrow, from the wings it looks like a great sparrow, but it has a white head?

Hi Steve,

Michael,

Actually it should be Plocepasser (suspect that you knew this and hence a good question to clarify this)
Nope - that one's new on me, I've not got any African bird books*, and Lynx HBW won't get to weavers & sparrows for several years yet

* Doubt I ever will, either, I don't fancy the tropics, too hot & too many nasty diseases for me ;)

Michael,
Here's the skinny on this genus.

Plocepasser mahali - WHITE-BROWED SPARROW WEAVER
Plocepasser superciliosus - CHESTNUT-CROWNED SPARROW WEAVER
Plocepasser donaldsoni - DONALDSON-SMITH'S SPARROW WEAVER
Plocepasser rufoscapulatus - CHESTNUT-MANTLED SPARROW WEAVER
