Starting a new thread on that little-birded island.

I have just returned from a family holiday, staying at Yalong bay.

I was able to do some birding and saw Hainan leaf warbler, greater racket-tailed drongo, ratchet-tailed treepie and, possibly the rarest, rufous-naped laughingthrush.

Thansk for this report Michael

The Hainan race of Black-throated Laughingthrush - monachus - does indeed lack the white cheek patch.

Yanoda sounds like it would be incredibly frustrating, but persistence is worthwhile. My permanat low level interest in going to Jianfengling is reignited aftresh - I was very disappointed to miss Ratchet-tailed Treepie there a few years ago.

Cheers

Congratulations on a productive trip, and glad I could be of assistance! Your assessment is correct: Jianfengling is well worth the trip up from Sānyà, even if you're on a family vacation.
