Work party this coming Tuesday FLASHES

We will be working at the FLASHES this Tuesday so can everyone meet at the Sailing pool car park at 9am or at the Flashes if you are coming later.
Work :
We will be pruning the west hedge and blackthorn to south of hide. This is to aid viewing of the hedgerow, rejuvenate it and increase its longevity. As with many other Hawthorn at the Flashes they are getting old are in desperate need of management before they die and fall over as we have recently witnessed.
The whole fox fence will be checked and either repaired or earmarked on a later visit.
Remove bramble and scrub from the southern section of fox fence this will damage the fence and make it easy for fox incursions.
Also we will be carrying out a controlled snipe/ jack snipe count.
John
Wellies would be best. :t:

Several tasks completed included:-
Cutting back the sprawling bramble along the west hedgerow. The job was much more difficult than we had anticipated. When viewed from the side of the hide it didn't look that extensive. It was cut back and the hawthorn hedge was now visible but it is in need of some heavy pruning as it is old and ready to collapse. The brash will be burned next week.

In conjunction with the above the blackthorn immediately south of the hide was cut down low. This will improve the views along the 'migration hedgerow ' .

The large magpie nest along the footpath was removed. The hawthorn immediately around it were pruned, but as with most of the hedgerow around the FLASHES it is old and in desperate need of some TLC. Also the bramble has been left to run wild and we are in danger of losing the hedgerow unless we take drastic action soon. This will involve strimming out large sections of bramble especially in this area

The fox fence was checked but only the section North of the hide had any holes in it. Presumably this where the fox has got though. Today we tried to flush it out but it either climbed out or went to ground in the blackthorn thicket. We will repair it next week.

In preparation for next week's work in the hen brook area, today we cut a path through the bramble. This will make an easy access so we can get on with the work unhindered.

Thanks Ian for the cakes.:eat:
