Just saw some Lovebirds here in Tempe, AZ (1 Viewer)

You are right, they're Peach-faced Lovebirds. They are native to southwest Africa and not Arizona. There are feral populations of these birds in Phoenix and Tucson.

So how exactly did these lovebirds get here to southern Arizona?

Escapes or intentional release. Don't know about the AZ cities, but some species of parrots are common in some neighborhoods in so.Calif. (L.A. and S.D.), also FL. There are even feral Monk Parrots in Chicago. I'm not aware of lovebirds becoming established anywhere in the continental U.S., though.

There has been sightings of small, growing larger, bands of these birds in Phoenix since the around 1996 - 1997. If you do a google search you come up with quite a few articles on them. Seemed to have started as escapees or released birds in the mid 90s.

Lovebirds are really good escape artists ...and they love chewing on wood, so be aware if you have any wooden furniture outside.
