Waxwing Colour Ring Sightings (1 Viewer)

Hi Everyone,

Grampian Ringing Group have colour ringed nearly 400 Waxwings this winter - 2016 birds have metal over White on their right leg along with three small colour rings on their left leg which let us identify specific individuals.

Aberdeen City still has a flock of up to 400 Waxwings and yesterday this flock contained individuals ringed at Ballater, Inverurie, Westhill and several sites around the city. We have had two birds re-sighted at Montrose, one at Stonehaven and an unfortunate window strike casualty in St. Andrews ( windows are a major hazzard for Waxwings). Today we also retrapped a bird ringed in Aboyne earlier in the month. Normally we would have had quite a few reports of sightings from England but it has been an unusual year in that the Rowan crop has lasted well in to December with the birds seemingly reluctant to move, however, January onwards should see 'Scottish' birds starting to turn up south of the border. Flocks in and around Edinburgh/Lothian would also be well worth checking just now.

We greatly appreciate if all birders and photographers can check flocks and photos respectively and report any sightings to http://grampianringing.blogspot.co.uk/ or raymond"at"waxwing.fsnet.co.uk. In such an unusual year these sightings will help us to learn more about the movements of these fascinating birds.

Many thanks,

Lindsay Cargill (Grampian Ringing Group)
