Latest update from the BTO: Happy 100th birthday Phil Hollom!
Today, Saturday 9th June, we say Happy 100th Birthday to very special BTO member, Phil Hollom. Phil published BTO's Field Guide No.1, Trapping Methods for Bird Ringers, and has served on BTO's Ringing and Scientific Advisory Committees and on BTO Council. He's played a key role in contributing to and editing British Birds over the years and has published several field guides to birds. Happy birthday Phil!
Phil Hollom has been actively involved with the BTO for decades and received the BTO's Bernard Tucker medal in 1954 for outstanding services to the Trust's scientific work, particularly for his work in connection with the Ringing Scheme and the Census of Great Crested Grebes. Phil served on the Bird Ringing committee (subsequently the Ringing & Migration committee) from 1937 to 1968, BTO’s Scientific Advisory Committees (1950-1955 and 1962-1969) and on BTO Council from 1957 to 1960 (last two years as a vice president). His contribution to the ringing scheme included the publication, in 1950, of BTO Field Guide No.1, Trapping Methods for Bird Ringers.
Long before then, Phil set the scene for BTO science, organising the national inquiry into the status of Great Crested Grebe in Great Britain, and he published the results of the sample census for this species between 1946-55 in the BTO’s journal Bird Study. Phil wrote The Popular Handbook of British Birds in 1954 and teamed up with Montford & Peterson to write A Field Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe in 1954. He was also one of the original team that started Birds of the Western Palearctic, providing distribution maps for many species. Phil played a leading role in editing British Birds throughout the 50s, 60s & 70s and was the first chairman of the British Birds Rarities Committee.
All at BTO, past and present, send you our warmest wishes on a remarkable, long and productive life in ornithology. Happy 100th birthday Phil!
