gulls (2 Viewers)

hi aleksey,

thanks for your pics from sicily, all are YLG indeed.
nothing is odd with 7526-27, many are as dark in early winter (1st winter).
the 2 birds in 7537&40 are of the same age (2nd cycles/2nd winters), the right one just being a little unusualy in that it looks very plain grey in wing coverts as opposed to the more scattered look of typical wing in 2nd winters.

all the best,

Finally a picture (a blurry one, unfortunately) with Jamie's Caspian in flight. I would go with 5cy for this bird, but...

4cy is also possible, cristian. at this age class usually it is not safe to tell for certain if it isn't 1. a clear 4cy/3rd cycle or 2. a clear 5cy (which is only the case if it looks almost completely adult). this bird has rel. large apical spots but small p9 mirror and an apreciable smudge on primary coverts, so could well be an advanced 4cy. that's why my gallery for this age class is called "4-5cy" ;) http://lou.bertalan.de/gulls/m_grp.php?g=cachinnans 4-5cy january-june

Possible Yellow-legged Gull at Watermead CP South?

Hi all, I took these photos a few days ago at Watermead CP South,Leicester and my gut feeling is that the bird is probably a 1st winter Yellow-legged Gull, but I just wonder what other people think?
I look forward to your replies,
Cheers,
Dave.

Hi Paul, yes have seen 10 Gull species in a day on many occasions at Seaforth NR, Merseyside. Also have seen 11 species in a day there on a least three occasions too, and on one memorable day there having twelve species which were; Ross`s,Glaucous,Iceland,Med,Little,Yellow-legged,Kittiwake,Herring,LBB,GBB,Black-headed,Common.
Also Richmond Bank in Cheshire is good for big days with Gulls, I recently had ten species there,Caspian,Glaucous,Iceland,Med,Yellow-legged and the common 5 spp.

dave, it could well be a YLG although i see too little detail in these pics to get a conclusive ID. nice caspian in your blog title.

"Hi Paul, yes have seen 10 Gull species in a day on many occasions at Seaforth NR, Merseyside. Also have seen 11 species in a day there.."

We struggle with Caspian (no records in Ireland? Maybe 1??) and YLG in Dublin. Our 10 would have to include ring billed.
regards
Paul

i see 5 pro cachinnans features. female type. a side view, pete?

ok, should tell them: pointed slim bill. high heels. pale tips to GC. thumbnail like tertial crescents. grey scaps with dark shaft streaks, simple pattern. to me quite a typical bird plumagewise, i asked for a side view or any other pic because it's always good to see it confirmed by body shape.

cheers

Hi Lou, thanks for your comments.Unfortunately it remained standing in that position until it flew off, so no side on images.
It was a small individual, so female as you say, but with amazingly long legs.

cheers, Pete.
