Some stuff from Morroco ! (2 Viewers)

Big admirer of your work Andrew. Nevertheless, it still manages to take my breath away on first view...
The Wheatear sketches are very special indeed, the Desert Wheatear painting is pupil dilating and the Goldfich is worthy of, well, lots of expletives. Great treatment of a familiar bird in unfamiliar habitat, incredibly well drawn too..Those thistles look animal!

Carlsberg don't do expletives - -- - but if they did, they'd be the best expletives in the world. But they still wouldn't describe the brilliance of an A. E. painting - b100dy marvellous!!!!!

Bonelli's Eagle

Hi guy's well remember a looooooonnnnnggggggg ...time ago I mentioned
that I had started a Bonelli's eagle piece .... Well I have finally got round
to finishing it . I had to put it away because of an important commission
that came up.

Anoying as that is I am really pleased with the finished painting.

Here is some of the sketches I made in preparation for it .

The Idea came to me for this painting whilst in Morocco in 06.
I was being flown on a small plane from Missour to Engil and as we
were passing over the foothills of the mountains I was gazing down
out of the left hand side window. About sevety feet below and traveling the
other way an Adult Bonelli's shot past gliding along.

It was just a fleeting glimps but with its white patch between the scapulars
and its unmistakable shape it couldn't have been anything else I was chuffed to bits!

moved by the experience and the view below I knew I had
to paint the eagle from this spectacular angle.

Here are some of the drawings and the painting in
progress. I'm going to tease you a bit and not show you the finished
piece . The finished one is on my Blog.:t:you will have to guess
where I put the Bonelli's in the composition and which drawings I used?

I watch your blog closely so I've seen the Bonelli's pic and it's breathtaking. Such a unique viewpoint and stunning landscape, perfectly rendered. Great when you get to paint stuff for yourself innit?!

Here's the Painting in progress.

The Drawing was a nightmare to do and took alot of time in itself.
I used a grid on the referance photo I took from the plane.
no Time for a nice colour field study there!! thats when cameras
come into there own. I then drew it out free hand using the scaled up
grid marked on the Gesso'ed panel.
I then fixed the drawing as I always do with a light wash of titanium
white.

I then put another washed layer using burnt umber and ultramarine
adding layer apon layer and continued building the contours
and gullies on the mountainside.

I then started puting on light washes to push back the far mountains
into the background. This Painting is all about distance and Height.
and the vast areas these birds have to cover in order to maintain
and hunt in their teritory.

The forth image is the background finished but where would you put
the Bonelli's? See what I did on my blog.

you can access the blog also via my website.
Hope you enjoy the images of this painting coming together.

Wow, what an interesting pic, abstract background and the birds are perfectly put into the composition. SUPERB with capital everything.

I tried to leave a comment on your blog, but am not sure if I was successful or not. It said something about the comment having to be approved? Anyway, the painting is amazing!! The placement of the eagles really shows their height and distance.

You definitely are the best at what you do.

I LOVE you sandgrouse painting! I really like the sense being there, right infront of the flying flock.

Can't wait to see more!
