- Two at the Moors Pool from 14th July 2013

The last successful LRP fledging was in 2011; in the last 10 years we have only managed to raise 7 young.

Trust Communications

Gentle Reader you are advised to add to your favourites page the Worcs WT page for Upton Warren Reserve.
It says there that work will take place from the 8th July for the next two weeks.
Of course that notice doesn't fully explain - as does the actual site notices - that the roving volunteers only work midweek.
Where's my wellies?;)

Well done Mike W for refinding the "lost' Shoveler brood. He had them swimming along the west side of the North Moors. At least 5 then rested on the west bank. Made my dayB :)B :)

Flashes Today

Three of us on site early this morning, Rob G arrived just before me, then Mike W afterwards. July can be a very productive wader month , so don't leave it until September - wader passage slows down by then (inland anyway). The decreasing water level is now exposing fresh muddy zones. Most productive of these being in front of the 'meadow known as the 'Gulley' and and the area south of this - the 'Central area' . The 'saucer and 'delta are now drying out slowly but the exposed mud is providing sustenance for LRP's mostly. Hopefully the LRP chicks will be well away from the juv BHG's.
Species Counts FLASHES:
Teal 5, Shelduck 9, gadwall 2, mallard 80 + many chicks, Tufted brood of 6, Avocet 36 + 7 ch, Lapwing 45, Curlew 1, LRP 8 ads + 1 juv + 3 ch (2 days old),

MOORS this Morning

Very few people around at 10am. In fact only Andy H taking 3 people from the Army Birdwatching group around the reserve.
Plenty of tern action now 3 lots of 2 in the rafts. The new brood were a bit shy so there could be 3. There were only 25 BHG's and they were very quiet in stark contrast to their raucous congeners at the Flashes. The 9 tufted broods were all present, but fewer chicks. The 2 wigeon continued to feed in the SW - west area. We initially though three gadwall were well grown juvs but then realised they had moulted their flight feathers and were in fact 3 adults in eclipse plumage. The 5 chicks and very 'bleached' female were also in the scrape. A small but obvious southerly movement of swifts was in progress. Cettis and reed warbler were active
Species count MOORS:
gcg 2 + JUV, Little grebe 8 - 10, greylag 2, gadwall 4 ads + 5 ch, mallard 220 + many chicks from fresh broods, Teal, wigeon 2, tufted 9 broods, coots and moorhen have several new broods, water rail juv in front of east hide.
Oystercatcher 3, lapwing 3, common sand, common tern 12 + 6 chicks. BHG 95, buzzard 5, kingfisher, great sp woodp. swift 40+, swallow, house martin 15, song thrush, cetti's w 2, reed w 6, blackcap 2, chiffchaff 3, linnet, bullfinch, reed bunting 6+ males.

NORTH MOORS:
Shoveler fem + 5 chicks min, teal, mallard 10, cettis w, whitethroat, blackcap, chiffchaff,
a sign of the dry spring/summer is that the seasonal pool has now dried up,:-C

Midday at Flashes.....only difference from UPSTARTS report was 13 CURLEW on far bank and just as I was about to close the window a HOBBY almost came through it.......then off over the mast fields.

Just a few pics from the past week.
Terns were feeding their young exceedingly well, although being constantly hounded by the BH gulls.
Oystercatcher was back and forth with an endless supply of worms although at the end of the week I think the young one had fledged to sunnier climes.
There was a nice display of goldfinches in the thistles outside the far hide at the Moors pool on Monday (can't for the life of me remember the name of the hide-note to me, look at the name on the door!!!)
Nice helpful people there as usual.

There have been very few reports of breeding activity for the Water Rails this year - the only other sighting I am aware of is 4 young in front of the West Hide at the Moors Pool on the early date of 26th May.

Hi Phil I spoke to a person 2 Sundays back who reported they had seen a Water Rail and a single chick from the hen brook hide.

Just to put these summer records in context, the region has had its first breeding record only this morning with a female and one duckling noted (or is that Nutt'ed? ;)) at Belvide

Sorry to be a bit off topic but could anyone identify this juvenile Gull species (which was taken at Draycote Water yesterday)?

Many thanks in advance

Chris
