I have a 30 year old Leitz Trinovid 7x35B binocular that I love. However, the focus dial is getting stiff. Do I dare to put in a drop of oil or should it be returned to Leitz/Leica for a going-over? JTT

Hi JTT and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

I've moved your post to the Binocular forum and subscribed you to the thread so you can keep track of it. I'm sure someone will be along soon with some advice for you.

Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy your time here with us.

Welcome to Birdforum, in my experience the issue with the focuser
is probably farther inside the binocular than out on the knob, so I
would not try any oil out there. I would give a phone call to Leica
service and they can give you some help.

Jerry is absolutely right, the problem almost certainly lies within the bins.

And bins are lubricated with specific greases that don't 'evaporate' fumes that can settle on the optics and allow the bins to function in extremes of temperatures. Mixing any oil in there would ruin this.

For goodness sake don't be tempted to use any penetrating oil like WD40 as this can creep all over the place inside your bins including over the optics resulting in a bigger, self-inflicted job to sort it out.

Best to follow Jerry's wise advice.
