... should be:
close to the sea
close to birding sites
quiet and comfortable, and
not too far away from anywhere (like shops, cafes..).

--> Something that suits a birder who hates water sports (incl. swimming), a wife who wants seeside, a little boy who might want to see some fish and maybe collect some shells, and two teenage girls, who probably don't know what they want...

Do you know a nice place for us to stay for a week (or two)?

Your recommendations are very much appreciated!

Hi there, we go to a small town called Rovinj up in the Istrian Peninsula every year. Lots of good places to go birdwatching, fairly quiet, no discos or yobbos and plenty of places to sunbathe & swim which keeps my wife & daughter happy. Hope this helps you, the roads are very good here too and it doesn't take long to drive into the hills or into slovenia. regards, gus

We do have a member of BF that lives in Croatia so she should be the best one for this. I have sent her a PM so hopefully she may be able to geive you some recommendations.

Hi eaR,

I am from Croatia. There are many possible destinations for you but I can not personally recommend any of them, since I have not yet visited them.
So I am giving you a list of Croatian birdwatching targets near Adriatic coast, together with links to help you gather more info and decide:

North Adriatic (closest major airports are in Zagreb/Croatia and Ljubljana/Slovenia)

1. "Cres" - Island:
http://www.caput-insulae.com/index_eng.html - ECO-center and Griffon Vultures sanctuary

2. "Glavina - Mala Luka" a cape in south Krk, near "Vrbnik":

- protected ornithological reserve

3. "Palud park" near Rovinj in Istria:

Professionally guided birdwatching tours on demand.

4. "Ucka" mountain Nature Park:

Near but not birdwatching destination.

5. "North Velebit" - National Park:

http://www.np-sjeverni-velebit.hr/novi_web/Velebit_eng/velebit_animals.htm - animals - not primarily bird-oriented destination but magnificent landscapes and nature, great hiking. Velebit is considered as the most beautiful mountain destination in Croatia. There are bus tours if you do not like to climb.

6. "Paklenica" National Park in South part of mountain "Velebit":
http://www.paklenica.hr/En/index_en.html - general
http://www.paklenica.hr/En/Offer5.htm - birdwatching tour
Here you can see Griffon Vultures in action!
This is a little bit farther from Krk but maybe you can manage.

Middle Adriatic (closest airport in Split/Croatia)

7. "Vransko jezero" (lake Vransko) - Nature Park and Ornithological reserve:

Also I can recommend you a blog http://www.croatiaonline.blogspot.com/ containing a lot of useful info for you. You can also ask the blog's author [email protected] for more help.

I hope you will pick some interesting and suitable targets from those suggestions.
Others can help you to plan more visits to Croatia in future.
Enjoy you vacation. I wish you nice sunny weather and a lot of birds.

If you need anything more do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Best wishes,
Vesna.

Thank you very much!

Many thanks to all of you! Your tipps sound really great.
At a first glance Rovinj seems to be ideal indeed.
(We all wonder how "Rovinj" is actually pronounced...)

Roh-VEEN

Ignore the "j", it's there merely for ortographic reasons - the difference in pronunciation of "n" and "nj" at the end of a word is minute at best.
