Came across him on the canal tow path - didn't fly off. Looked a bit clumsy.

About the size of a large chicken/small turkey.

It all happened so quickly (yesterday) that all I could do was to reel off a couple of snaps before he darted into the long grass.

Some sort of game bird?

Shame all I'm seeing are regular birds, but it's interesting and educating so I'm enjoying learning.
