Batumi Birding Week (1 Viewer)

There are only three places in the world where you can see over a million raptors migrating during a single season. One of these is Batumi, Georgia: a new birding hotspot with much left to discover.
Every autumn, a massive southbound flight of up to 34 species of raptors is observed along the Black Sea coast. On peak days, counts reach over 100,000 raptors. And there is more: the nearby Chorokhi delta teems with waders, crakes and terns, while bushes along the coast bring a diversity of eastern passerines. Our motto is easy birding: all birding sites are conveniently located within 30km from the accommodation, so you can devote your time to birding and enjoying your holiday rather than spending hours in the car.

The Batumi Birding Week in a nutshell:

8 days of top birding
Excursions in small groups
Highly experienced BRC birding guides
Raptor identification workshop on the raptor watch station
An exciting evening program: identification of some WP rarities such as Crested Honey Buzzard, bonfire night, last evening’s dinner on the beach
A range of nice accommodation options, from local guesthouses to luxury hotels

Any profit from this week directly benefits the local community and the conservation of this crucial bottleneck for raptor migration.

For this year, we are organising not one but two Batumi Birding Weeks.
In contrast with the Batumi Bird Festival, they are a more low-key event for birders with a more modest budget. On these weeks, you get a similar set of day trips and stay in the village guesthouses, perfect for enjoying authentic Georgian culture and a with basic comfort level. Evening lectures are held in the village café and given by BRC-volunteers. The events include full board (prepared by the host family), all excursions and transport (including airport pickup)
The first one (Honey Week) is timed to coincide with the honey buzzard and Montagu's harrier peak, and will be held from 30th of august until the 6th of september.
The second one (Eagle Week) is timed to coincide with steppe buzzard and eagle migration, and will take place from 27sept-4okt.

If you would like to combine your visit with some birding inland Georgia (in order to see some of the Caucasus), we'll have extensions of 4-5 days before or after the events.

I will be glad to provide you with additional information on those, for anyone interested. Just send me a personal message or email [email protected].
