Paid a visit to Exmoor this morning and in one small bushy tree saw a pair of Redstarts, a pair of Stonechats, a male Whinchat (the female was in the next tree) and on top of the tree was a Tree Pipit. All seen from the car. I was only able to find two Wood Warblers though despite visiting three sites. Roger

Some nice upland birding.

Looks like Somerset was the place to be going by rare bird news recently - forget the south coast or norfolk ...

Especially if you include sites like Chew Valley Lake which used to be in Somerset. Roger

Sand Bay is in the former county of Avon so you'd be better off looking at Avon Birding., Adrian.

News from Sand Bay/Sand Point/Middle Hope (all more or less the same place if you're prepared to walk a bit...) usually comes in daily as it is a well-watched patch.

Spent the morning in Horner woods, and was rewarded with superb views of Redstarts, both male and female, dippers, pied fly catchers and wood warblers.

Hi Max
Glastonbury is pretty much the best spot to base yourself. A few miles to the west lie the nature reserve complex of the Avalon Marshes. Ham Wall RSPB and Shapwick Heath NNR are the key sites to visit. Bittern, Marsh Harrier and Great White Egret are easy to see there at the moment along with other typical reedbed birds. Garganey, Bearded Tit and Hobby are showing well too currently, though they all can be elusive. Westhay Moor and Catcott Lows are two excellent Somerset Wildlife Trust reserves also nearby that are often worth a visit.

I regularly post latest sightings from the Glastonbury area on my website (in my signature below) so if you like, have a look at that to see 'whats about'.
I hope you enjoy your visit here, it's a great place for birding. And if you're interested in other wildlife as well, there are plenty of dragonflies, butterflies and wildflowers too!

Joe

Had a quick walk around Greylake this morning and was rewarded with good views of spotted flycatchers in the car park and yellow wagtails near the hide, a single teal was also on the pond.

Glad you enjoyed it Max!

It is a fantastic reserve eh, there's due to be a new hide put in this autumn which should hopefully allow for better photo opportunities, as you noticed, the visitors are somewhat detached from the birds as it is.
