I found this beasty walking across my drive this morning. I haven't seen one of these for about fifty years, and probably didn't know what it was then!

It's a Vapourer Moth caterpillar.

A bit surprised you haven't seen one in so long, I don't think they are at all scarce - certainly not here in the South East.
 
Very many thanks David! Moths and catterpillars are not something I go looking for; if they turn up I take notice. I suppose it's a bit like birding; right place, right time!
