The August 2006 competition theme is 'Butterflies, moths and other insects'.

From the 83 entries this month, 30 have been selected for inclusion in the voting booth.

Please select your favourite insect photo.

Entries can be viewed as either - Thumbnails or as a Slideshow.

For this months rules - see here

Very difficult to choose this month as there are lots of extremely good Photos.
I knew my own effort was doomed as soon as I saw a few of the others, still never say die,one of these days.....

Now that had to be tough picking the last 30 - expected some that aren't there, most notably "A Dream" by Carpie...... whilst the butterfly was facing the wrong way & not as sharp as some images, was probably the image that most effectively got across what the photographer saw...... the white blossoms, the subject looking off into the distance, which just happened to be a really great background that really gave the feeling of distance. A slight sadness about the image.
A sadness not to see it there also, but who to take off the shortlist...... a real tough one for the moderators.
Nonetheless a real tough group of really excellent photos, especially "Little Blue".

Good luck all........ and very well done

Wow what a collection of shot, congratulations to the moderators for picking out 30 great shots, it must of been hard.
Good luck to you all.

Incredibly high standard! It wasn't at all easy to reach a decision but I finally plumped for Ouch! as I think it's a powerful image beautifully composed.

Boy was this a close run thing - though far closer than I expected as there were so many superb entries.

However this month the honors go to -

1st place - pilatus0 with Little Blue which attracted 17/110 votes cast.

2nd - Potter Wasp protrait by anonymous guy which attracted 16/110 votes cast.

3rd - Snow Betty Clearwing Moth by etow.

Congratulations to the winners and to everyone who entered :t:

Thank you to everyone who took the time to cast their vote.

Details of the September competition will follow shortly and may differ from the posted subject.

That was close. Congratulations pilatus0 a beautiful photo. Commiseration to anonymous guy another brilliant photo. Congratulations go to everyone, another great competition.

I only noticed these after the polls have closed for some reason - would have been almost impossible to pick one this month though - some absolutely stunning pictures involved and a quite amazing standard all round.

Many congratulations pilatus0, annonymous guy and etow all amazing entries and deserving of being in the top 3!

Pilatus0!!! It was a really magnificent shot with everything about the image being just perfect. Well worthy of being the winner, very many congratulations!!

This month's competition entries were extraordinarily good . Congratulations to the top three for win, place and show. But, isn't it time for us to examine the voter turnout , about 110, out of a total BF memebership of 48,000+ ? It's like the only people who enter the competition plus a few others are the only people who vote. Is the Voting Booth too difficult for some members to navigate to? As many years as I've been a member and voted on competitions, I was frustrated in finding my way to the Voting Booth this time. I can't be the only one. Anybody else out there have any ideas in this regard? Or any other ideas? Thanks, Mary

May I say I always vote...mine this time got 3 votes Marbled White...I liked it!!

However the winning ones were great....I go on what I like!!
Most of the members do not post at all least of all vote on something that takes time...its the way of forums maj do not post at all and some 1 or 2 ...dismiss the 48,000 they are not the maj who post that is limited!! Look at the membershiip...most have never posted!!

I've never entered before (or voted obviously) as to be honest I never knew there was a competition. I think perhaps it should be more easily promoted elsewhere on the site though.

I didn't find the Voting Booth that hard to locate as I just came back to the "Photography Competition" part and saw the short list and followed on from Ian's instructions which were relatively simple.

Regarding the numbers of entrants/voters: It has to be remembered that not all members will have cameras anyway, with some not even being interested in photography, but that's inevitable. However, for that reason I suppose you'll only get people who enter to bother voting, a handful of others too, but not in the numbers you'd hope for. So if it was to be more widely promoted perhaps it could be far more interesting. Let's hope for more entries in the future.
