Highlights from today ( 05.30am 0nwards )..........


Common Tern number's, up to 70+ birds.


Other notable birds..........1 Peregrine Falcon, 8 Common Sandpiper, 3 Yellow Wagtail, 4 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Water Rail, and 7 Grasshopper Warbler.
 
Hi Peugeot,

VERY envious of your Yellow Wagtails. Never seen one. Are they staying in the same area each day! If so where a so would live to catch a glimpse of them..

Was told looking in cow pastures was good but not found any yet.!

* This particular site, is very strictly, by Permit Holder only, and has no public access *


But further a field..........I would suggest that you look in areas of saltmarsh, or pasture, where sheep are frequently grazing, particularly during migration periods.....hope this helps......

Common Tern number's, remain stable at 70+ birds.


Other notable birds..........1 Common Sandpiper, 2 Peregrine Falcon, 4 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Arctic Tern, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Great White Egret, 1 Yellow Wagtail, 1 Whimbrel, 9 Avocet ( all recorded as flyover's), 1 Spotted Redshank, and 4 Grasshopper Warbler.

Highlights from today ( 05.30am onwards )..........


Common Tern number's, have risen considerably, to 200+ birds, which had roosted at the colony overnight...........


Other notable birds...........2 Cetti's Warbler, 3 Grasshopper Warbler, 2 Great White Egret, 1 Peregrine Falcon, and 1 Swift.


Adjacent Estuary........150+ Black Tailed Godwit, 3 Avocet, 1 Spotted Redshank, and 1 Mediterranean Gull.


***** It was very nice, to bump into James this morning ( JWN Andrewes from Birdforum ), where we also jointly enjoyed, 3 Whinchat, which soon became 2 Whinchat ( after 1 bird, was seen being taken by a Sparrowhawk ). *****

Judging by this morning's visit, it's looks like, it's going to be another very successful breeding season for the tern's this year,.................

Highlights from today ( 05.30am onwards )............


500+ Common Tern, were noted roosting at the breeding colony at first light, this is the highest number, that I've ever personally noted, as early as the 1st May.


Other notable birds........... 3 Cetti's Warbler, 3 Grasshopper Warbler, and 1 Garden Warbler.

A quick visit before work today..........


700+ Common Tern, were at the breeding colony.

2 Grasshopper Warbler were heard.

2 Cetti's Warbler were heard.

1 Swift passed through.

Other notable birds............ 70+ Sand Martin, 30+ House Martin, 2 Wheatear, 2 Tree Pipit, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Whinchat, 2 Cetti's Warbler, 4 Grasshopper Warbler, and a small passage of 22 Swift at first light.

Wren, is now incubating eggs in the Bird Hide.


Common Tern colony, remains stable at 700+ birds.


Black Headed Gull colony, remains stable at 200+ birds.


Other notable birds...........2 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Grasshopper Warbler, 1 Peregrine Falcon, 20+ Swift, 2 Great White Egret, 3 Wheatear, 1 Tree Pipit, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Bullfinch, and 3 Dunlin.

Common Tern colony, held 700+ birds.


Adjacent Saltmarsh/Estuary..........42 Dunlin, 4 Avocet, 3 Great White Egret, 3 Whimbrel, and 300+ Knot.


Rough Grassland/Scrub/Gorse/Open Ground.........1 Whinchat, 3 Tree Pipit, 1 Snipe, 1 Cuckoo ( female ), 1 Wheatear, 3 Cetti's Warbler, 4 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Grasshopper Warbler, 80+ Sand Martin, 20+ House Martin, 20+ Swift, 1 Garden Warbler, and 1 Spotted Flycatcher, ( recorded at exactly the same area of bushes, as the 2 previous years...........possible same bird returning to site?

The Wren's that were breeding in the Hide, appear to have now fledged.


3 Cetti's Warbler were heard.


Other notable birds....... 1 Hobby, 2 Wheatear, 2 Whinchat, 1 Ringed Plover, 2 Sparrowhawk, 1 Spotted Flycatcher, 1 Red Kite ( flyover ), 2 Yellow Wagtail, 1 Marsh Harrier, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Cattle Egret ( flyover ), 4 Avocet ( flyover ), and 2 Great White Egret ( flyover ).

A lovely place to visit on a fine sunny evening, where there are well surfaced paths throughout, and a varied mix of habitats which includes, a large wetland area with stream and small pools, a golf course, open fields and woodland, and access to the Shropshire Union Canal tow path.........


1 Hobby, was seen 'hawking' for dragonflies, over the old golf course.


2 Kestrel, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Buzzard, 3 Common Whitethroat, 2 Garden Warbler, 4 Blackcap, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 20+ House Martin, 2 Grey Heron, 2 Reed Bunting, 1 Sedge Warbler, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, and 1 Green Woodpecker, were also noted.

Pools........3 Great Crested Grebe, 8 Little Grebe, 5 Tufted Duck, and 4 Gadwall.


Flooded Grassland Areas........19 Common Sandpiper ( predominantly juveniles ), 100+ Black Tailed Godwit, ( which included many summer plumaged birds ), 20+ Curlew, 5 Yellow Wagtail, 20+ Little Egret, and 7 Great White Egret.


1 Cetti's Warbler was heard.


Rough Grassland/Scrub Areas.............3 Kestrel, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 20+ Long Tailed Tit, and 1 Peregrine Falcon ( juvenile ).


Other wildlife.........2 Weasel, 1 Stoat, and 1 Grey Seal ( pup ), which was sunning itself on the adjacent mudflats.

Pools.......7 Tufted Duck, 3 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Teal, 4 Little Grebe, and 6 Gadwall.


400+ successful breeding pairs of Common Tern on the Rafts.


1 Mediterranean Gull, was also noted.


1 Cetti's Warbler was heard.


Flooded Grassland Areas...............31 Common Sandpiper ( predominantly adults,.......apologies for yesterday's typing error ), 5 Grey Heron, 1 Grey Wagtail, 12 Little Egret, 6 Yellow Wagtail, 15 Black Tailed Godwit, 1 Great White Egret, 15 Curlew, 8 Oystercatcher, 1 Green Sandpiper, 11 Shelduck, and 20+ Lapwing.


Rough Grassland/Scrub........1 Stonechat, 2 Mistle Thrush, 2 Kestrel, 2 Buzzard, 1 Peregrine Falcon, and 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker.

Flooded Grassland Areas.........33 Common Sandpiper, 2 Grey Heron, 3 Oystercatcher, 13 Curlew, 6 Little Egret, 9 Pied Wagtail, 3 Great White Egret, 2 Green Sandpiper, 2 Black Tailed Godwit, 3 Yellow Wagtail, 1 Grey Wagtail, and 1 Little Ringed Plover ( juvenile ).


Rough Grassland/Scrub........Marsh Harrier ( a very spotted white juvenile ), 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Reed Bunting, 100+ Goldfinch, 3 Raven, 200+ Starling, 50+ Swift, and 20+ House Martin.

Pools.........2 Mute Swan, 4 Little Grebe, 7 Tufted Duck, and 2 Great Crested Grebe, with 140+ Canada Goose, 4 Common Sandpiper, 30+ Lapwing, 1 Greenshank, and 2 Green Sandpiper, around the margins.


1 Cetti's Warbler was heard.


4 Great White Egret, and 1 Whimbrel, were recorded as 'flyovers'.


200+ Starling, 2 Raven, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Coal Tit, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, and 2 Mistle Thrush, were other notable birds.

Pools........14 Tufted Duck, 2 Little Grebe, and 2 Great Crested Grebe, with 4 Common Sandpiper, and 4 Green Sandpiper, around the margins.


1 Cetti's Warbler was heard.


1 Great White Egret passed through.


Other notable birds........2 Garden Warbler, and 100+ Meadow Pipit.
