Have added a few more species (in bold) since my first list submission. The lovebird and Mitred Parakeet are not considered ABA countable and so are not on my ABA list, but I do count them on my lifelist.

Cacatuidae (1)
Galah

Psittacidae (10)
Rosy-faced Lovebird
Red-crowned Parrot
Green Parakeet
Mitred Parakeet
Musk Lorikeet
Monk Parakeet
Crimson Rosella

Rosy-ringed Parakeet
Rainbow Lorikeet

Still haven't seen the local parrots in LA. Supposedly "frequently sighted" in my area.

Anyway my short list, completely from the Melbourne area as my transport was greatly restricted:

Rainbow Lorikeet
Scaly-breasted Lorikeet
Musk Lorikeet
Little Lorikeet
Purple-crowned Lorikeet
Swift Parrot
Australian King-parrot
Blue-winged Parrot
Red-rumped Parrot
Eastern Rosella
Crimson Rosella
Galah
Long-billed Corella
Little Corella
Sulphur-crested Cockatoo
Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo

So bummed that I missed Orange-bellied Parrot by 30 seconds. :-C And I was the only person out of more than 100 that missed Gang-gang Cockatoo at a "guaranteed" spot.

Silverwolf,

I can vouch for a fact that Red-crowned Parrot, at least, is abundant in the LA area. I saw hundreds there a couple years ago in a week long trip in southern California.

Carlos

My understanding is that their are now more Red-crowned Parrots in the wild in Southern California than their native Mexico

Its unfortunate how uncommon Red-crowneds are now in Mexico. Through the '70s, tens of thousands were trapped for export. You still see them for sale within Mexico.

Sorry to hear you missed the Orange-bellied and Gang-gangs Silverwolf. In sort of a reverse situation, some years ago a birding friend was visiting St. Lucia. He, a guide and a large group of others had hiked up a trail to look for the St. Lucia Parrot. No luck but at a mountainside look-out, while the guide spoke to the group, a lone St. Lucia Parrot flew across the valley below and quickly out of view. My friend was the only person facing the valley and therefore the only one to catch a glimpse of the bird. One very happy birder and a whole lot of unhappy birders left the mountain that day!

I'm off to the Yucatan in another couple of weeks. One of my nemesis parrots has been the Brown-hooded. This will be my third or fourth time solidly within their range and I'm hoping this time's the charm! The Brown-hooded is the only potential new parrot for me this trip so fingers are crossed!

A few more from Chile :-

Patagonian Conure ( Burrowing Parakeet )
Austral Conure (Austral Parakeet )
Mountain Conure (Mountain Parakeet )

Chris

I finally saw a Red-fronted Parrotlet well enough to count it and add one more to my Psittacid total for 61 species. It was also one of the more memorable sightings, surreal actually. In June, 2012, I got out of bed after hearing a strange vocalization near the house. Went outside and saw a silhouette of a small parakeet perched on a cable. Never heaving heard the other candidates give similar calls, I ran upstairs, grabbed my scope (sans tripod) and propped it against the bedroom window to focus on the bird.

Incredibly, yes, it was a Red-fronted Parrotlet! This little known species is infrequently seen but appears to undertake quite a bit of migration within Costa Rica- up, down, and over mountains in search of food. I suspect that deforestation in the Central Valley is part of the reason why it is so rare.

Another very memorable sighting was my first Amazonian Parrotlets. While doing parrot surveys at the Tambopata Research Center in Peru, I had to crouch in a small blind near an equally small clay lick to count any birds that showed up. Not so many did but the few that made an appearance were Amazonian Parrotlets and White-bellied Parrots. Not only was seeing them memorable on account of their scarcity and rather recent discovery, but it was also memorable for being the best photo opportunity I ever missed- tiny, rare parrots 2 meters away and no camera (this was just before the advent of digital cameras)!!!
