I had a surprise today. I saw a pair of cormorants at Lanark Loch, a shallow loch that's not exactly teeming with fish.
This is the first time I have seen cormorants here, even in winter. I don't know if they have settled for the season or were just passing through for a day or so - but for the two hours that I was there, one was on a branch of a tree on the island and the other spent most of its time in the water, close to the shore of the island. Occasionally both would fly over the entire loch.
For the inland birders and birdwatchers, if you're lucky, you might still catch them if they are hanging around for a bit.
