Lens upgrade thoughts (1 Viewer)

Thinking i want to make some changes in my lens lineup. Right now Canon 7D MK II body. 400 5.6L and 100-400 MK1.

A majority of what i shoot (90%) is birds which i use primarily the 400 5.6.
The 100-400 is a fill in for birds and also primary for butterflies and dragonflies.

My though is to swap the 100-400 for either a 70-200 f2.8 or f4 IS or maybe 70-300L.

or sell both the 400 5.6 and 100-400 for new version of the 100-400 MKII and just use one lens.

Weight is a concern as just coming off back surgery and don't want to be carrying a heavy load.

Thoughts, suggestions?

I'd go for the new 100-400. That avoids any swapping lenses over in the field and gives you image quality almost as good as the 400 5.6 (or indeed better in circumstances where you wouldnt get a useable shot without IS).

I strongly recommend the Canon 100-400mm L II. I exclusively shoot wildlife and especially dragonflies (I Admin a specialist group of over 3,500 members on Facebook).

I had a Canon 400mm F/5.6L and 300mm F/4L IS which were both very sharp but the new 100-400mm has a shorter minimum focal distance and is surprisingly good for dragonflies and butterflies as well as birds. Image quality from the 100-400mm is just as good as the primes I had.

I mostly carry mine one-handed on a 7D Mark II with Canon Battery Grip. I use an Acratech Arca-Swiss clamp attached to a BlackRapid cross body strap. I am 69yo.
