APO Televid 77 thread damage (1 Viewer)

Has anybody out there ever lost the thread on the bottom of their APO Televid 77, pretty much rendering the scope useless, as it no longer screws onto the quick release plate? If so, does the whole scope have to go to Germany for repair?

Mike,

Mine has worked loose...but fortunately I did'nt lose it!
You should be able to go to a specialist shop/dealer and get a replacement.
Try Focus Optics..in Corley near Coventry.
They have always been very helpful to me and I'm sure they will help you.
They have adverts in the Birdwatching magazines..
Good Luck..

Dave.

On the bottom of my Zeiss 85 is a thread within a thread - this acts to reduce the original base-plate thread size (which I think is a Eurpoean tripod mount thread) to a UK size tripod thread.

The inner thread broke into two a few days after I got the scope - but I called into my local camera shop and, lo and behold, they sold spare threads at, I think about £1-99 each - so I bought two, thinking it might happen again.

If that's what you need, PM me and I'll give you their address.

This happened to the early Nikon scopes where the thread material was stripped out, usually by a combination of overtightening and soft metal. The solution was for an engineering firm to drill out the old threads and install a 'helicoil' thread insert, made of a harder metal. This happened to my scope and the process cures the problem once and for all. the 'helicoil' inserts are widely available. Contact Leica customer service first on 01908 256400 and ask to talk to Malcolm, the service Manager. He will advise if its a warrantly claim or give you an estimate for the repair. You could also try a local friendly engineering firm.

It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
