S. Florida migrants - warbler type IDs needed! (1 Viewer)

This past weekend, migration has picked up significantly down here in S Florida - and the variety has been excellent. Of course, that invariably means a few small warblers, vireos, etc that I don't know and can't quite figure out an ID on - so I come to the experts here for some assistance! All of these photographed in Boynton Beach, in SE Florida...this past Saturday and Sunday.

1. Unknown? Maybe a vireo, possibly red-eyed?:

2. Unknown? The grey head is throwing me off:

3. Unknown? - Initially I thought prairie warbler, but the white around the face is throwing me:

4. Not 100% sure if this is the same bird as #3 - but similar white markings:

5. Again I thought possibly red-eyed vireo due to the black stripe that looks to be going through the eye:

6. Greenish cap, yellow under chin, grey on face with slight blueish, white belly - I have no idea on this guy:

Any and all help appreciated. Heading to bed now - will check in tomorrow morning EST to see what anyone might have on IDs. Many thanks.

1. Possibly red-eyed vireo, but I don't know
2. Mourning Warbler
3. Prairie Warbler
4. Prairie Warbler
5. Red-eyed Vireo
6. Northern Parula

1. haven't seen a red-eye vireo with markings on the undertail, but the tail shape is typical of vireos, so red-eyed for me
2. American redstart
3. prairie warbler
4. prairie warbler
5. going with red-eyed vireo, despite apparent dullness in overall colouring, supercilium far too bold for warbling and bill too thick
6. northern parula

Ref. #2: American Redstart. Note orangish patches in front of the wings and yellow in the tail, Adrian. Both features are wrong for Mourning W.

Agree with Adrian and Silverwolf on all IDs except #1 - which was a real poser! Those u/t coverts and overall buffy belly are all wrong for Red-eyed, or any other vireo I know of... but the colour is fine for Worm-eating Warbler, as are the "dusky centres on the undertail coverts, often visible in the field" (Dunn & Kimble).

The white line on brow really threw me for a while, until I realized that it is actually just reflection from the edge of the leaf in the foreground. You can just make out a bit of central crown stripe above that. (The combination of the two - faux supercilium, and the crown stripe - made me think of Golden-crowned Kinglet at first - a very odd one!)

PC.

re #1 Looks a warbler, not a vireo to me. With that undertail, crissum and a pale eyebrow bordered black it can only be a Worm-eating Warbler.

edit: Peter got there first!

Many thanks. The prairie and the redstart for #2 I agree completely - now looking at them with that in mind. And the first as a vireo seemed right to me. Interesting on the last one for parula - I just somehow never put that one together, and I shot probably 15 other parulas that same day - this one somehow looked different, maybe because of the shadow and some of the colors looked a little different from the others.

On the worm-eating ID, that also makes sense as later that day in roughly the same area I did photograph two worm-eating warblers who were clearly identifiable...this one's angle threw me off.

Thought the undertail looked weird for re vireo, agree with worm-eating now I've researched it...learned something there. Not a bird I've ever dealt with before.

I thought the apparent black-yellow crown stripes (cf Golden-crowned kinglet) were odd, but put them off as being photo artifact...seems they are actually there after all.

Oops! American Redstart is certainly correct! Didn't see any white on the breast though, just the patch of yellow, which threw me off. I agree with worm-eating warbler. That one didn't even occur to me; I've also never dealt with one.

My "gut" reaction to the thumbnail (before I looked at the head, and said, hmm, stripes) was Red-breasted Nuthatch! Which goes to show how useful that is!
