Canon 100-300mm IS lens

Do any of you use the Canon 100-300mm IS lens is for photographing birds? (On a Canon 10D), and if so, perhaps point me to a few sample photos?
Or.. advise me against getting it and recommend a better lens? (for about a similar price of £400)

Thanks
Susan
