Hi,

I was out in some local woods two or three months ago and came across these small clumps of hair on the woodland floor.

Is anyone able to tell me if this came from a Badger? These particular woods are under threat from development and so it would be particularly interesting/valuable to learn if there are Badgers there (although one would hope that their presence would be picked up by an Environmental Impact Assessment).

Without being able to see it in the raw and touch it, I'd say it was deer hair.

I'd agree. Badger hairs don't tend to be as straight as most of those look, usually have a bigger section of black, and don't have the goldey tips you can see. Sorry! Interesting to see in such big clumps though.

Definitely Deer hair, you can id it by the kinks along its length, it is also hollow which insulates the animal against the cold. Because it is hollow it is used in some floating fishing fly patterns like Deerhair Muddler and Elkhair Caddis.
