Hi James,
We are in the midst of developing a parcel as a nature preserve. We have received a large amount of help from our local Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). They are a government agency, usually one office per county across the U.S. Their offices are normally within your county US Dept of Agriculture (USDA). This link will get you started: http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/ If you call their office, they will have literature or will point you to other reference resources. They are one of the few government agencies that I freely admit I am glad I pay taxes to support.
