Woodpecker - Europe in February.
Hello everyone
A friend sent me this photo of what he described as a Great spotted woodpecker female. The photo was taken in Europe last month. At this point I won't say where, but it was within the range of GSW but NOT of Syrian. To me this shows three features of Syrian woodpecker; 1. The black on the "cheeks" not curving up onto the nape 2. Paler red on the undertail coverts (?) 3. Outer tail feather mostly black with only 2-3 white bars. What does everyone else think? This is the only photo he has of the bird. Sean |

Interesting bird; did you also see http://birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=108436?
I agree on the features you highlight, but the feathers on the nostrils look black to me, which would be a GSW feature according to Jos. The forehead looks white (pro-Syrian). The white spots on the wing look better for GSW (just checked that again). But why not give the location – I don't really see the point... The nares look better for GSW and as do the white spots on the primaries.
But I also agree with what you said before, but perhaps more of the white tail bars on the outer recs are obscured?

White forehead is dificult to value in this image due to risk ov overexposure. GSW (and hybrids) can lack the dark post auricular stripe and there´s overlap in undertail covert colour tone.
Outer tail feather pattern seems good for Syrian. JanJ |

At first glance, a nice Syrian, but agree with what's been said, there are small things that just don't add up. So where was it taken?

Well, apologies everyone; the story is this.
My friend took the photo in the UK. He did a little work in Photoshop (hence the anomalous features!) and sent it to me to see if I noticed.......... He's a cheeky scoundrel! I wish I was that good with Photoshop! Sorry again Sean |

lol - he certainly did a good job there! I can't see any of the manipulation on it!

Was going to say the cheek band looks as if it's been photoshopped out, but didn't want to offend anyone!
