reddish common toad

This immature toad was in our garden today. It was quite a bright brick-red colour. Is this unusual. I think I read somewhere that frogs can turn red as a result of a virus but does that happen to toads too?

This looks perfectly healthy to me- not the "red-leg" virus that frogs can get. As you suggest there are variations in colour; a handsome chap!

perfectly healthy. You often find them this colour, a very variable species

Hi Ken,

If you look at your photo you'll see your Toad is very dry looking, but when you see Frogs they always show a wet, slimy appearance. Good photo.

Sue.

Interesting point, Sue. I hadn't known that. This one is certainly damp looking
