Red face Bird from India

Hi,

I actually stumbled upon this forum when I googled "Bird Identification".I was looking for some one knowledgable to provide some information about a bird whose pictures i took yesterday.
Looks a bit like a Stork , i have no idea as i am an amateur. It would be great of you guys to help me out a bit. I hope i am not sounding rude , barging in like that and shooting a question, but there you have it.
I will post the pics in a minute.

Thank you in advance.

Actually , just recently I developed an interest in photographing the various birds which visit the space behind my house. I have been blessed with a pretty wooded area behind my place and it invites lots of different types of birds and other assorted creatures.

I had no idea how to go about identifying the birds because I have only a rudimentary knowledge of birds. Can anyone suggest how to go about it , I mean the process of identifying birds.

Hi Nightwolf

You're correct with Asian Pied Starling and Common Myna. However I can't help you with the third one. Maybe a Babbler or some kind of Thrush.

Greetings from Switzerland
André

Thanks for the info mate. I'll check if it matches a Warbler or Thrush in the database.

Hi Nightwolf,

The third bird is a Turdoides Babbler, either Large Grey Babbler (Turdoides malcolmi) or Jungle Babbler (Turdoides striatus).

From your photo it is challanging to say for sure which; do you have any other photos that show the breast or particularly the head?

If I were to guess, the plain-looking tertials and possibly unstreaked breast/flanks, plus jizz, suggest Large Grey Babbler to me, but I'd be happier with other photos to prove.

BobTag, I'll upload a couple more shots I took of that bird. I think it will become clearer.
Thanks.

Thanks, as I've changed my mind again; the relatively short and dark tail is now saying Jungle Babbler to me! Look forward to seeing the further photos.

Well, the first photo looks like a Jungle Babbler, and the second a Large Grey Babbler! Let us see what others think...

I checked out the birds you suggested in an earlier post. Its unlikely to be a Large grey warbler but the Jungle Babbler looks promising. Can't say for sure.

Hi there Nightwolf; it's Large Grey Babbler, not warbler.

What brings you to this conclusion?

I am not an expert at all but since I've seen this bird myself this morning and after searching for the bird on google , the images very much resembled what I had seen.

Cheers

And also the Wikipedia article stating its habitat matches the place where I live( Bhubaneswar , Orissa(India). There is also a picture in the article supposed to have been taken there. That combined with the pictures convinced me that the beird is more likely a Jungle Babbler rather than a Large Grey one. :)

Nightwolf,
There are some really good field guides for India which will help you. Just google them. I know some of the book shops around Delhi sell them and I'm sure they will be available across the country, else mail order.

It is the Jungle Babbler and they are found thru out Western Central, Eastern & Southern India. Also in parts of Northern India. They are almost everywhere.
