Smile White Tailed Eagles in Mull

hi there

I watched Animal 24:7 on BBC 2 2.15-3PM today and there was a mention of the White Tailed Eagles on the Island of Mull.

There are only 40 pairs of WTE in the UK alone, so hard to believe at the moment. This is general information mentioned.

The first part was to show that the whole island was up in arms, and they wanted to protect the WTE from ruthless egg thieves which seen to be a huge problem in the area. Sometimes there where between 30 -70 egg thieves reported on the make in the local area. So there are hard to track down.

There are 100 volunteers who are always watching and reporting the WTE to the RSPB. Forestry Commision, the Police, and associated bodies. There have been so many egg thieves that the islanders are protesting like no bodies business (who can blame them)
Any strange cars that the islanders do not know, they track down and make sure that the occupants are up no good at all. The islanders are on the ball, and will take no outsiders with a pinch of salt at all.

One person who I will not name is the main insistager of the birds and their habitat. I know his first name was Findlay.

On the program some of the chicks came to a sad ending through bad weather, and the chicks had fallen out of their nests to the ground below.

The positive side was that there was one chick checked to see how it was doing, and it appeared to be healthy and allowed itself to be ringed.

The young ringed bird that was mentioned has a ring attached and it will be interesting how it fairs (Ring 221553) - TV mentioned the details, not me

So what do you think of this and I would love to know if anyone from Mull is a member on this forum to add to this interest.

Kathy

hi Steve

Thank you for your information, and I will carry on looking and watching out for the WTE's in the near future.

surely, if there is 30-70 eggers on the go in the area, they would be easy to spot???

Hi Mamo

Yes, 30-70 egger's are a lot of people to have around. If they know how to keep themselves anonymous - they will, and it may be very hard to find them. They are just clever people in what they try to achieve.

How can you tell an egger from a non-egger - well that would be a hard one to know?

My understanding of the program was that all people who where not living local on Mull itself - where treated with suspicion. Any strange cars etc... unknown people - people who did not live on the Island itself.
Each person, and vehicle was scrutinized. It was a bit of a 24:7 hour vigil on looking after the birds interests first and foremost each time.

This was mentioned on the program itself, and I am just stating what was said.

http://www.birdwatch.co.uk/website/i...1065&Itemid=32

Taken from the link:

A new hide for watching White-tailed Eagles has just been opened in the best location for viewing the birds in their Scottish home, announced the Forestry Commission. [/i]

I have added this websites (there are others too) about the WT Eagle for extra reading. There is Steve_zodiac's link too.

There will be some more up to date information around somewhere i am sure.
