Hummer ID, Las Vegas, NV, USA
Hi all,
Here are 3 hummers from Las Vegas, Nevada from this early September. I saw lots of hummers, but had trouble with all of them. I am thinking the one sipping the red flower is a broad-tailed hummingbird, and the one whose back we see clearly is either a Costa's or a Black-chinned. But I can't tell the difference. The third would probably also be a broad-tailed. Any ideas? Last edited by notesfromtheroad : Tuesday 16th September 2008 at 21:42. Reason: adding photos |

Broad-tailed, Black-chinned (note wingtip structure), probably Broad-tailed (selasphorus at least).

The middle hummer is not an Archilochus sp. (Black-chinned or Ruby-throated); the inner primaries are too wide and the bill is a bit too deep. Looks like a Costa's to me with that white throat, but can a young Anna's be ruled out?.

I'm still stuck no Black-chinned. The sides are quite clean (bad for Anna's), the bill long and decurved, the throat pattern matches BCHU better than COHU. The bird doesn't have the stocky feeling on a Costa's either. Also, according to Sibley the broad-ended outer primaries and spacing between inner primaries is fine for an Archilochus as I interpret it.
Costa's (note smudgy auriculars that begin to wrap around throat like a necklace). http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2149/...51fa1f.jpg?v=0 http://farm1.static.flickr.com/22/30...dc6ba7.jpg?v=0 http://www.ebirdseed.com/blog/Hummingbird3_400_enh.jpg Black-chinned (wing): http://www.schmoker.org/BirdPics/Pho...rds/RTHU18.jpg |

Nice argument for Black-chinned from BirderBF.
